Gone are the days of the finely tailored men with their excessively groomed eyebrows enough to make me disgusted at my own face caterpillars every time I look in the mirror. Say goodbye to the Metrosexual of the early 2000’s and hello to the newest trend among the trendy gentlemen, the Lumbersexual. But what exactly is a Lumbersexual and what qualities do they posses?
Urban Dictionary defines a Lumbersexual as “A metro-sexual who has the need to hold on to some outdoor based ruggedness, thus opting to keep a finely trimmed beard.” But really, I think there’s much more to it. The Lumbersexual isn’t just about his finely coifed beard, but cares about his overall clothing style which includes more “outdoorsy” pieces mixed and matched with sleeker clothing options. Example being, comfortable flannel shirts with skinny jeans or similarly snugger fitting pants.
But how exactly do you be Lumbersexual?
Here are some essentials it takes to be one. There are 5 major qualities of this manly breed.
The Lifestyle – The most important quality is the man’s overall lifestyle. “Bigger” is not “better” unless you are referring to the newest in technology. He values items that feel good and were made to last – something he can have for many years to come.
The Wardrobe – As seen above, Flannel and jeans are staple pieces in the Lumbersexual’s closet. However, they aren’t all he wears. He’s more about quality clothing that fits well and comfortably. His clothing is neither stuffy nor polished. Can we say L.L.Bean?
The Beard – The Lumbersexual cares about his facial hair. He always has at least some serious stubble to help make him feel like a man, but usually he is host to a full grown, manly beard which he takes great care of.
The Diet – He eats organic or fresh foods whenever possible. If he killed or caught it himself, it’s even better. He enjoys utilizing locally grown, and made foods rather than shopping at typical grocery store chains. Eating well is important to him.
The Habitat – While he can survive in Suburbia, he prefers something less fussy and restricting. He enjoys having more land for his home to sit on, including some space for some outdoor activities.
Lumbersexual Actors
Just to give you some insight, here are some actors who might fit the Lumbersexual definition (and where you know them from).
- Hugh Jackman (X-Men)
- Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones)
- Jason Mamoa (Game of Thrones)
- Joe Manganiello (True Blood)
- Matthew McConaughey (Magic Mike)
- Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko)
- Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
Does your man posses any of these qualities? Does he dress like a Lumbersexual?

Hnnnnggggg. Lumbersexuals are hands down my favorite.
Right? Yum.
Hahaha I love this . My husband has switched jobs recently where his work doesn’t require him to dress up daily so he has taken to wearing flannel and is attempting to grow a beard. I am trying to get accustomed to his new look. I am a little scared from facial hair after going out with a guy whose beard smelled like a ball towel or something ha.
Haha Well if it ever gets too unruly, Heather up there actually makes this awesome stuff called Damn Handsom Beard Balm that’s supposed to smell amazing, plus help him keep his beard looking nice!
Ha thanks for the tip! The boy has been out of town for business for almost a month so I’m interested to see if he actually was able to grow one or not. I accidentally bought him a beard trimmer instead of a razor for Christmas so that was part of his motivation. Hopefully he’ll come home not looking like he has a sad 70’s porn pornstache.
Oh no! LOL Not a pornstache! Keeping my fingers crossed for you. At least if he comes home like that, he has a nice trimmer he can immediately use on it ;)
…he came home with a goatee….and a pornstache. Someone will be getting Nair put on them tonight after falling asleep.
Kimi, the picture is close. Here is a tip. A true LumberSexual uses a “double ax,” not a single like the one in the picture. Using a single edge ax is not all that hard to use. All axes are hard to use safely, true, but a true “LumberSexual” always uses a double edged ax, preferably something handmade from Sweden. It cuts better, it is probably handmade, and looks better next to the cappuccino machine when you bring it inside.
Bwahahahaha. That made me chuckle for real. One’s axe should always match the cappuccino maker. That’s just about standards. :P
YES, just YES to this post. Give me all things lumberjack!
Haha I’m glad you enjoyed ;)
The last three on your are all clean shaven in their roles (I think). I always thought that being a Lumbersexual required some facial hair but I could be wrong!
The roles were just there to help remind people of who the actors are – not necessarily a suggestion that they portrayed a lumbersexual in those movies. But thank you for the comment because I see now how that may have been kind of confusing haha.
Yum. I seriously need a lumbersexual man. Seriously.
Finally there is a word for me? Wow! I should come out of the woods more often!
I never thought that I would become a “style.” This is really, really funny to me. Yes, I really do have a job in the city and yes I really do chop my own wood after work, lol.
In my advice to woman who date LumberSexuals, yes, Danner boots on a first date are perfect. However, Wolverines are not a good sign. When you start sizing up your LumberSexual to see if he, or perhaps even she, is going to test out as a true LumberSexual, always start with the footwear. Even the beard is a “maybe.” If, however, your target shows up calmly, even a little shy, not quite sure what to say, most women completely blow it right there. Look down. Check the footwear. Freeze. Look at the boots. If they are Danners, get really. Sit down. Stap into the chair, pick up the rod, tighten the safety belt in the trolling harness, and get ready to set the hook. That is a real deal LumberSexual. A lot of women think a LumberSexual should be more “flashy.” They aren’t. They are comfortable working. They are skilled with their hands. When they go home from their office job they go home and work cutting wood or fixing a fence. They are not out in the bars after work learning how to smooth women. That is why there is a “pause.” GO! Set the hook!!!
I work at Filson, a 118-year old Seattle outfitter that is THE definition of Lumbersexual. These guys are my bread and butter (so, thanks for dropping so much money on looking like you’re more badass than you are, guys!), but in the day to day they look a lot more interesting than they are. At least, here in the PNW. Or specifically, at work, because at work it’s Hipsters in Flannel Who Have a Mild Outdoor Activity Hobby.
Which makes sense, because if you can afford a wardrobe full of Filson, you probably spend all your time working and have no free time to chop wood and hunt bears.
I’m probably going to get fired for this comment…..
