Did you know that Funko produces many different lines of products all under the same brand? It’s true… there are other Funko branded products to collect besides my much beloved “Pops”. In fact, I wanted to talk to you today about the Funko collectibles that actually got me started down the slippery slope to being a collector.
In the My Little Pony sector of the Funko world, these Funko are simply referred to as Vinyl Figures. And within that, the more rare ones are called “Chase Variants” – a special clear or opaque body mixed with glitter. These rare, Hot Topic exclusives are hard to come buy and if you don’t find one in store or happen to be one of the lucky few to get one in an order from the online store… they can easily cost you upwards of $300 EACH to purchase third party.
Crazy? Yup. I know.
But that’s what I collect. They mean more to me than any of my Funko Pops because to me, they are my true collector’s items. It’s also why I have so few of them… currently a total of 8 Chase Variants and 2 non-Chase, special editions.
If you know anything about My Little Pony, you’ll notice that none of my Chase Variants are of “the Mane 6″… mostly because they all had their run in stores before I started collecting and now they are very expensive to buy. For example, a Chase Variant Princess Twilight Sparkle costs an average of $65 third party. Ouch.
Chase Variants I Own
Yes, he’s the one that started me down the path to Funko collecting. I’ve shared the story several times, but in case you’re new… My bestie bought this guy for me when I was first getting into My Little Pony. He happened to see him put behind a counter (back when my local Hot Topic employed someone who had any clue about them) and he bought it there on the spot. It’s not my most expensive… but it’s the most loved!
Princess Luna & Princess Celestia
I have had some good scores however particularly my Princess Luna (which I actually traded my standard to my bestie for who preferred the look of it) and my Princess Celestia (which I scored while working at Hot Topic). To buy them now would be especially outrageous!
According to Pop Price Guide (which you collectors should totally be using), my Chase Variant Princess Luna and Celestia are worth a minimum of $200 and $90 respectively! I got really, really lucky with them.
I think one of my favorites is my Chase Variant Derpy. She’s a 2013 SDCC Exclusive that I purchased third party last year. I forget how much I spent on her – somewhere between $30 and $40 I believe. Soooo worth it. She’s absolutely adorable and pairs so well with my Doctor Whooves!
As you can see, she has her derpy eyes as well. Fun Fact: Derpy is actually a fan created name. Her name was originally credited as Ditsy Doo and was later changed because it was so heavily used by fans! There are several ponies with fan-created names… Doctor Whooves credited name is actually Time Turner!
Shining Armor was an in-store purchase thanks to some friends and fellow collectors of mine who set him aside for me. I wish so much that I had a Chase Variant Princess Cadance to pair him with. I gave away a standard version in a giveaway last year.
Unfortunately, Princess Cadance is kind of pricey – between $60 and $80 depending on who you get it from third party. She’s absolutely gorgeous and I’d love so much to have her so these two lovers could be together!
Another present from the bestie. Trixie is one of my favorites from the show. She’s completely ridiculous and a complex character. I love, love, LOVE this figure. It’s super pretty!
Fun Fact: This Funko doesn’t have a tail. I think it’s super funny. They didn’t bother finishing her hind end because in the standard, you wouldn’t see the tail or her cutie mark. But it looks kind of funny in the clear version. I wish they had finished her… because Trixie’s cutie mark is my favorite!
I just sort of happened on Sweetie Belle one day at Hot Topic. She was just sort of sitting there as if no one had a clue what she was. So I snatched her up. I wish I had her friends, Scootaloo and Apple Bloom so I could round out the Cutie Mark Crusaders!
While these Funko are Hot Topic exclusives, we occasionally find them elsewhere third party. That’s what happened with DJ Pon-3… Jeremy found her at one of our favorite local comic book & games shops.
Once again, she’s one of those ponies who has a fan created name and interestingly enough, I’ve been saying it wrong for years! Vinyl Scratch aka DJ Pon-3 has her fan created name said aloud in Season 6. I have always read it as DJ Pon-IE… because 3 in “133t speek” (anyone remember that? haha) is E. But they keep literally calling her DJ Pone 3. So weird.
Chase Variants I Don’t Have
Princess Twilight Sparkle
Uhhh… Yeah. Kind of missing a LOT of them unfortunately. They are expensive and hard to come by. If I had the money, I could just buy them all third party, but it would cost me thousands of dollars that I sadly do not have. But that’s why the ones I have mean so much to me… they are truly collector’s items!
