I was combing Bloglovin’ today, going through my ever-growing list of blogs that I just haven’t kept up with lately (remember how I totally had the plague for like 2 1/2 weeks recently?). I’m going through this list and realizing that there are just too many that I no longer have an interest in and it’s not always about the blogger’s niche. Sometimes, I have the following reasons that I stopped reading your blog…
1 // You suck at formatting.
Look, I don’t think I’m the best ever at it either, but I try to make things easy for you to read around here. At the very least, you should be utilizing that thing called an Enter Key. It does this really cool thing where it allows you to create paragraphs.
Look! I just did it. Isn’t that neat? It makes it so, so much easier for me to read. I have stopped following blogs that feature content that is nothing more than a huge wall of text. It hurts my eyes and I don’t like it.
2 // You Never Post Anything of Substance.
I love your confessional posts and your list of awesome links you found that week. Honest, I really do. But is that all you’re posting? It really surprises me the number of blogs who only post that kind of content. What happened to the neat posts you used to make about life, blogging tips, makeup and whatever else you were posting about that made me follow you in the first place?
I know sometimes we get in a slump. Sometimes, the inspiration simply isn’t there. My blog has “filler” content to keep it going just like everyone else’s. But you need new and original content to keep people interested.
3 // You haven’t posted in like, forever.
We all get busy, but a little consistency goes a long way. Even once a week… heck, once every 2 weeks and you’d probably keep me interested. But if it’s March and you haven’t posted anything since Halloween, I may just assume that you don’t intend to use your blog any more.
4 // Every post features a selfie or picture specifically of you.
Yes, of course I want to see you and get to know you. That’s like… half the reason we’re all blogging, right? But if you literally post a selfie or picture that is specifically of you (not of something with you, behind you, etc) and it has absolutely nothing to do with your posts, I am going to stop reading.
I am shocked at how many bloggers do this. If you are a fashion blogger and you are showing clothes you are talking about – great! Of course you’d include pictures of yourself. If you are talking about the latest in diaper wipes, I don’t need your smiling mug at the top of the post. Weird.
5 // You never respond to my comments.
I put just as much effort into leaving comments as I do my own posts. I try to leave something of quality… something that warrants some sort of response. I am NOT one of those “Nice post” comment people at all.
I get it. You get hundreds of comments and you probably don’t have time to respond to all of them. But scrolling through, I notice that no one else is getting replied to either. If I have commented on your blog in excess of 5 times without any acknowledgement, then it leads me to wonder if you are worth my time. I’m not sure you care that I’m reading, so why am I even here?
BONUS // Your ads are literally all over the place.
Ads are a necessary evil if you want to make money for a lot of bloggers. I know how tempting it is to put them everywhere. Mo’ ads, mo’ money, right? Wrong.
If your blog has ads that make noises when I scroll over them mistakingly or end up expanding the full size of the screen, they are a problem. In a lot of cases, you have no control over it either because you have chosen to use Google Adsense which has somehow determined that I specifically would love to have these types of ads in my way.
It might not be so bad, except you have them everywhere! – In the sidebar, at the top of your website above your header, in the post, at the bottom of the post, at the bottom of your website. Need I even go on? This is too much and it makes me stop wanting to visit.
What are some reasons that you stop following someone’s blog? How many of the ones I listed can you relate to? Is there anything I should know about? Haha
