After falling in love with the concept of subscription boxes, I knew I needed to find another to try out. I mean, who doesn’t love getting good mail, right? I wanted something more on the girly side and just for me (since I actually share my Loot Crate subscription with Jeremy). I checked out some blogs and did a little research and decided I wanted to try Ipsy.
What is Ipsy?
Every month, subscribers pay just $10 (it includes free shipping!) and they receive what is referred to as a “Glam Bag” with deluxe samples and often full-sized beauty products. In each bag are a few staple items along with a couple of items chosen for you specifically. It’s more than a subscription box – it’s a whole community of women working together to rate and review products as well as create and share different looks utilizing the products. All of that… for just $10!
It doesn’t stop there. In addition to all of the beauty products and samples and the community, you can earn points towards purchasing other full sized items. Being an Ipsy member even gives you exclusive access to huge discounts and promotional offers! You need to subscribe and get on their waiting list!
What? There’s a Waiting List!?
Well, yes. That’s how awesome Ipsy is. There are only so many subscription slots available every month. But don’t worry… I actually found it pretty easy to get off of said waiting list. To “Skip the Wait”, you can share and like Ipsy on Facebook, subscribe to their Instagram and YouTube channels and in some cases they may also require one completed friend referral to complete the “Skip the Wait” process.
I was off the the waiting list the very first day and the number of non-blogger friends I found interested in Ipsy surprised me. I don’t think you’ll have any trouble getting off of the waiting list and well on your way to your very first Glam Bag – which I just received in the mail!
First of all, let’s talk about how exciting the packaging is. I love getting mail. I didn’t know how much I love, LOVE, love getting pretty mail. My Ipsy Glam Bag arrived in a metallic, fuschia bubble sleeve. It was well sealed but not any struggle at all to open – a huge positive found in the strangest of places.
Inside of my package at first glance was a smaller zippered bag, a pink-handled makeup brush (because it couldn’t fit in the bag) and an #ipsyLOVE post card. And within this adorable bag… products I have already adopted as my every day go-to makeup items. Yes, I loved them that much. So let’s talk about each item individually!
GlamGlow BrightMud Eye Treament
This was a strange product that I kind of expexted to be some sort of actual pastey type mud for dabbing under my eyes. It says it will help with puffieness, dark circles, lines and hydrating your skin. Well, it wasn’t a mud. It honestly looked like I was dabbing old baby food under my eyes.
Speaking of how to use it… I don’t know that I found the instructions all that clear. It literally says “Use one dual chromecell per use, 2-3 times per weeks or when needed.” Let’s start there. What’s a chromecell? And what constitutes this product being “needed”? It says to tap on the entire product under your eyes and orbital eye. What is an orbital eye!? I seriously had to look it up. I guess this means I can put it around my eye area, but not directly on my whole eyelid? Well I just used it under my eyes on fear of doing it wrong. I was to then leave the product on for 3 minutes and carefully wipe the product off with a dry tissue.
I don’t know that this product actually did anything for me. It was interesting to say the least. I received 2 samples of this – I assume to get a more full effect of the product by doing it twice this week. I’ll give it another shot.
PRICE: $11.66 (for two)
Luxie Brush 504 Large Angled Brush
I’m woman enough to admit that I only recently discovered the world of makeup brushes. Sure, I had a couple I was using for eyeshadow application, but I had no idea the power of using makeup brushes for foundation, blush or anything like that. Because of that, I own very few brushes. I am so super excited to have this one!
First off, it’s pink. How freaking cute is that? Secondly, I love, LOVE, love that the tip of the brush is white. It makes it so much easier to see how much product you have loaded onto the brush and more importantly, if you’ve really gotten it clean! The bristles are super soft and it made blush application so simple.
PRICE: $16.00 (currently on sale for $8.00)
Model Co Blush in Cosmopolitan
I um, might have been using a really old blush pallete that an ex boyfriend gave to me for Christmas from his time in Cosmetology school (look, don’t ask and don’t judge!). It um, might be like 3 years old. I’m so embarassed. I keep meaning to buy new blush, but I always seem to forget and I have been really worried about choosing the wrong color.
I am so happy this blush found its way into my Glam Bag because I LOVE it. It’s just the right subtle amount of pink to help give me that “I swear, I’m just pale and not dying” look that I need!
Cargo Comestics Lip Gloss in Anguilla
I have seen a lot of complaints about this product based on color. Perhaps I am in the minority here, but I actually really like the color and find that it suits me. However, I think that may be a personal style thing. See, I don’t wear bright colored lipsticks. I have a mouth shape that isn’t flattered by those wild colors. I stick to colors that emphasize my natural lip color usually.
Yes, this is a bit light but I think it actually ended up looking rather nice on me. And besides, it went over a darker lip color well. I’d suggest lining your lips with a darker shade and using this gloss on top of it if you’re looking for something natural and sweet.
My only problem with this lip gloss is, well… it’s a lip gloss. I’ve never much cared for them. I find them sticky – despite this one claiming it isn’t (yes it is – they all are).
Nyx Eye/Eyebrow Pencil in Crystal Shimmer
Again, very happy to see this in my bag. I was just watching an eye makeup tutorial a week ago that talked about highlighting the inner corner of your eyes if you are like me and have a very hooded eyelid. It’s supposed to pull the attention away from that and focus people more on your eyes. This shimmery, white pencil really does the trick! I love the shimmer – it isn’t overdone and it really brightens my eyes up. But eyebrow pencil!? I don’t think I’ll be drawing in white, sparkling eyebrows anytime soon. Maybe Halloween?
My only complaint is that after wearing it a few days, I worry about the safety of the product. It contains little flecks of glitter which I have noticed tend to find their way into the corners of my eyes and eventually onto my eyeballs. Maybe I am missing something here because I have tried a few different things now – including 3 (yes, THREE) different primers in attempt to make it stay still.
