I’ve been hearing a lot about this thing called essential oils in the last few months. It sounded all very… hippie to me. I’m sorry if that’s offensive. I just imagined a bunch of women putting more faith in the power of these vials of oils instead of taking their kids to the doctor to get checked on. But, I’m open-minded (I swear!) and when InstaNatural (a company I am really enjoying embracing the products of) offered a free sample of a few of their essential oils, I figured I’d give it a shot. I had no idea that I would find myself on the essential oil bandwagon.
Having never used essential oils before, I had to do some research before my samples arrived. What are these even for? What is their purpose and why is everyone so ga-ga for them lately? By the time my samples arrived, I was prepared with a small arsenal of ideas for using them.
Before I get into that, I want to mention that I am impressed with the size of these bottles I received. Instanatural has always been good about providing me with full-sized samples of their products as a way to compensate me for my time and energy. The reason I am impressed with the 4 FL OZ size of these bottles is because for the mere price of about $20 per bottle on Amazon, I pictured a much smaller bottle in my head.
So let’s talk about one of the 2 bottles of essential oil I received…
Official Blurb on Amazon: Brighten your day with the invigorating & uplifting smell of freshly peeled fruit with InstaNatural’s Lemon Essential Oil. With so many uses, Lemon Essential Oil is a must-have for any household or office. Incorporate it in skincare recipes for a boost in antioxidant benefits. It has also been known to be a natural astringent and skin-lightening agent. Its refreshing, cheerful citrus aroma can help alleviate mood and improve mental well-being. Plus, the antibacterial and antimicrobial properties found within the oil make it the perfect cleaning solution…
When I opened the bottle, a huge burst of citrus hit me in the face. It isn’t overpowering, but I wouldn’t exactly go shoving my nose into the bottle. It’s a large, glass vial with a glass squeezy dropper (is there a better word for that?). The instructions on the side merely tell me to use a diffuser for a fresh, clean scent in my home. I was really, really hoping to get the diffuser sent to me for the purpose of this review, but alas… that didn’t happen.
So what can you do with this stuff? Here’s just a small list of ideas I found.
- Combine 2-3 drops of lemon essential oil with water in a spray bottle. Use it to clean and sanitize surfaces or instead of Febreeze on most cloth surfaces.
- Add a few drops of the oil to a chicken marinade for a great citrus boost in flavor.
- In place of a diffuser, put a few drops of oil onto a cotton ball (placed somewhere my cats wouldn’t get to it!) and the aroma will easily fill a room in an apartment.
- You can also put a cotton ball with a few drops of lemon essential oil into a refrigerator to eliminate odors.
Here are some ideas I tried…
Like I mentioned, I did my research and already knew there were some things I wanted to try. The first on my list was to incorporate a few drops of lemon essential oil into my hand cream. My hands have been so, so dry lately to the point that one of my cuticles painfully cracked open. I work a job where customers look at my hands all day and I do a lot to care for them and keep the skin looking healthy. I’ve been really bummed that my skin despite its dryness wouldn’t hold moisture.
I took a small mason jar and mixed my hand lotion and a few drops of the lemon essential oil together in it with a small spoon. It smelled AMAZING. I set it aside and went about my regular hand care routine, washing my hands in lukewarm water with a gentle scrub to remove any dirt or dead skin. I wanted to do a really deep moisturizing session, so I pulled out my lotion gloves. Yes, I totally have lotion gloves that I sometimes wear. I told y’all… I take my hands very seriously! You can get a similiar pair of lotion gloves on Amazon for like $10.
I pulled up American Horror Story: Coven on Netflix and Jeremy indulged me while I sat there moisturizing my hands over and over with this now lemon scented concoction of awesome. I may have even convinced him to let me put some on his also very dry and sadly rough man hands.
I love the smell of citrus and it fortunately blended well with the scent of my hand cream. I suggest using a lotion without fragrance because the scent can get pretty intense. Like, I’m pretty sure I am still going to smell like lemons after I shower for work in the morning. Hope my coworkers like it. Haha.
I’m pleased to report that my hands feel a lot better. Even my nails feel moisturized when they previously felt oddly dry and brittle themselves. My cuticles have a more healthy and hydrated look to them and overall, my skin just looks and feels lovely.
I am calling this experiment a win!
I read that you can place a drop of oil onto acne and it would help balance out the oils in the skin to calm the blemish down. I still sometimes get a flare up on my neck in particular and I find these angry, red blotches to be super embarrassing. As with any new facial regimen, I was wary of what it could do to my skin and what possible bad or allergic reaction I could have.
I diluted a few drops of the lemon essential oil into a cup with a teaspoon of water. I then used a cotton ball to test a small patch of skin. After a few hours, I was satisfied that my skin wasn’t going to get angry with me and I wiped my entire face down. It felt cooling and almost tingly. I woke up the next morning with happy skin!
Does my skin look brighter? It’s difficult to explain but it almost has a more healthy glow to it. Sometimes my skin looks sort of dull and the lemon essential oil really perked it back up. I’m thinking of trying the full power of it directly on my angry neck acne and seeing what it does! You can Buy InstaNatural Lemon Essential Oil here on Amazon or at InstaNatural.com
Okay, I’m sold. I’m a believer that there may be something to all of this. Have you used essential oils before? I have one other bottle to try so stay tuned for that! In the mean time, what are some good uses for Peppermint Essential Oil? I’m thinking about trying a couple of drops in my shampoo.
