Craigslist can leave such a terrible taste in your mouth. I for one am not new to the woes of using it. But what happened this week when I put an ad up to give away a miniature air hockey / pool table and the reactions I received may surprise you.
Jeremy is finally letting go of this stupid game table. He’s had it for years and it’s occupied prime Christmas tree real estate in our apartment for the 6 months we’ve lived here. Number of times we’ve played it? Two.
I was super jazzed when he told me I could put an ad on Craigslist with the stipulation that whoever wanted it would have to come pick it up and haul it away themselves. I didn’t want Jeremy lifting a finger… didn’t want any possibility of him getting hurt. So despite the potential interest of a few local friends, I put an ad up with the thought in mind that it would be difficult to get rid of the table – because seriously, who is going to want an old used game table that they have to drag down a flight of stairs?
Apparently the answer is… a lot of people. The response to the ad was overwhelming. Within 2 hours of posting, I had over 30 emails to sort through. Yikes! I read every one of them and most of them offered up a story of hardship, lack of finances, loss of employment and children in need of Christmas gifts.
Ugh. What a complete and total jerk I am. It never occurred to me that anyone would want the game table for their children as a Christmas gift and now I had over 30 people to let down. I couldn’t very well choose the best story. I had to be as fair as possible and fair meant emailing every single person to apologize and let them know that I would try to get the pool table to someone in the order I received interest.
And then I received a wonderful email from a gentleman regarding how I’d chosen to handle the issue.
I know this is just one more email for you to rummage through. I just wanted to thank you for renewing my faith in Craigslist. So many people abuse Craigslist, making demands, being rude, taking advantage of others, etc. Your response to your overwhelming replies for a free game table is definitely one of the best responses I’ve ever seen.
I hope your game table finds a good home where it will be appreciated to make it worth your time and effort. I also hope you have a great Christmas as giving away the table will likely brighten someone else’s Christmas. You are a kind person with a big heart and I felt compelled to thank you for that.
All the best to you,
I am so absolutely touched that he took the time to write that to me. He has no idea how much I needed that little message and I am so grateful to him for it. Believe me, my faith in the people who use Craigslist has been restored a little bit too.
